51 minute 19 second single channel video with original score by J.David Franzke

Commissioned by the Art Gallery Of New South Wales Sydney, for the exhibition The National 2019: New Australian Art, The Ongoing Remains: 3 Parts comprised sculptural elements (Part 1), moving image (Part 2) and photographic elements (Part 3). Parts 1, 2 and 3 presented at diverse sites thoughout the Gallery's Neo-Classical and Modernist architectures.

Part 1: The Emissaries, Keepers of our Stories - installed in the Gallery’s Entrance Vestibule and Grand Court- comprised 26 unique state, intentionally misaligned casts based on the fifteenth century portrait of Niccolò da Uzzano, attributed to the Italian Renaissance master Donatello.

Part 2: Wit(h)ness, A Haunting (featured here) a 59.19 min single channel HD video projection representing the wearing away of an edition of the casts created for Part 1 amid soft white clouds of dust. It was installed at large scale within the context of the  nineteenth century sculpture collection in the Gallery’s Old Courts.

Part 3: Continuum, The Persistence of Being,
comprised three photographic portraits of selected cast residues generated by production of Part 2. A selection of these portraits were installed in galleries on the level below.

The Ongoing Remains Part 2
: Wit(h)ness, A Haunting 59.19 min single channel HD video was commissioned by the Art Gallery of New South Wales for the exhibition The National 2019 New Australian Art.

It represents the mechanical wearing away of an edition of the casts created for Part 1 of The Ongoing Remains project. The erasure process generated soft, white clouds of plaster dust that counterpoise the violence inherent to the image.

The original score composed by J. David Franzke is inspired by the idea of the figure's memories being released as the cast is worn away.

The video was installed within the context of the  nineteenth century sculpture collection in the Art Gallery of New South Wales Old Courts.

The clip above shows the first 9 minutes of the 51 minute 19 second original.
