Andrew Hazewinkel 101 Collins Street

Commissioned as part of the internationally competitive curatorial revisioning of 101 Collins Street Melbourne - imagined, developed and enacted by curator Dr. Emily Cormak - Hazewinkel’s large paired sculptures The Sisters (Sibyls of Metamorphosis) reflect on the correspondences between our bodies and architecture and ways in which conditions of care and neglect bring them closer together.

Part caryatid, part reassembled fallen classical column, The Sisters bring together the embodied sensorial dimension associated with the figurative sculpture and the negotiated pragmatism of architecture. Permanently installed in the public access Sanctuary Garden at 101 Collins - conceived as an urban oasis - The Sisters reveal themselves as entities in transition, figures in the process of becoming, of shapeshifting, of surfacing.

Drawing inspiration from ancient fragments and figures found in the sanctuaries on the southern slopes of the Athenian acropolis, these figures stand confidently in the contemporary realm.
