ARTIST NOTES

I am the son of a printer. During my early adolescent years I slept in a bedroom lined with printing plates. Most of my friends had wallpaper, but I had zinc plates with colour-separated images of Australian colonial landscape painting (in negative). It was a matter of economics not aesthetics.

Sometimes in the summer, when I couldn’t sleep, i’d pull back the sheets and draw my naked body, while feeling nervous about being discovered. Sadly those private sketch books no longer exist, I dearly wish they did and I have often wondered about what they might reveal, but I have no idea what happened to them.

While making this small group of folded brass reliefs those forgotten intimate drawing experiences returned, unfolding in my memory. Folded printed images have always captured my imagination, they reveal the presence of something that we are unable to see, without revealing what it is that is hidden. For me they have always summoned a desire to unfold and to refold anew. In these small reliefs classical idealisation is folded in on itself, we are still able to sense its spectral presence but here it assumes forms that are perhaps a better fit for today.
