Landscape based contemporary art practice

Taking the sand-casting process out of the foundry and back into the landscape, where it began, Hazewinkel’s distinctive, in-the-earth, landscape casting practice approaches the landscape as an active co-contributor participating in processes that generate unique-state, location-specific, figural entities, shaped as much by the material qualities and stratigraphies of their place of origin as by Hazewinkel's understanding of culturally diverse histories of human figuration.

Often returning seasonally to work with the same landscape he creates ‘generations’ of location-specific figures that blend and embody (variously) the geological, marine, riverine, and anthropic temporal registers and residues of their place of origin. This commingling of temporalities occurs through the presence and agency of the location-specific materialities captured in each figure's surfaces and volumes.
