Three lead figures cast in unique one-pour moulds created in wet sand at low tide on beaches of personal significance to the artist. Appearing both ancient and contemporary these figures carry with them the residues of their places of origin in that geological material that comprise the landscapes they are created in becomes an integral part of them. Here beach sand, shell fragments and small sea rounded stones have become embedded (or embodied) in the molten lead fishing weights Hazewinkel uses to create these figures. Taking the sand casting process back into the landscape (rather than a foundry where it is more commonly practiced today) he creates volumes and surfaces that remind everyone who has ever been to a beach of the sand on skin sensation and, more obliquely, of the more complex relationships between our bodies and the landscape.
