These delicately rendered drawings have material and subject matter links with the early history of photography. They are created through a unique process of layering metal foils - silver, aluminium, gold, copper - onto large sheets of carborundum sandpaper. Hazewinkel developed the process while undertaking a photographic archive research project, during which his focus was on the environmentally stimulated deterioration of the silver halides on a collection of late nineteenth, early twentieth gelatin dry-plate glass negatives. For him, the degradation of the silver halides, combined with the bluish silver sheen on the surface of the glass - due to the plate's exposure to high humidity - imbue the archaic stone sculptural subject of the negatives with fugitive, shape-shifter qualities.
