Curated by Nicola Lees the 31st Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Art OVER YOU / YOU derived its title from a note in the corner of a Martin Kippenberger drawing; which like an unresolved equation orientated understanding toward the instability inherent to the reproducibility of images. Extending the framing of the long established term 'graphic art' by drawing on sculptural, filmic, performative and experimental pedagogical modes, the exhibition explored both the formal and socio-political characteristics of an expanded field of reproduction methodologies.

For his installation 12 figures (after Niccolò) studies in collective anxiety Hazewinkel recast twelve versions of an 1885 copy of the 1432 terracotta portrait bust of Niccolò da Uzzano attributed to the Renaissance master Donatello. In doing so he employed a deliberately imprecise casting technique drawing our attention to the layered historical developments, material implications and expressive potentials of reproduction technologies.

Working in plaster with a pliable silicon mould Hazewinkel misaligned the mould's three parts while subjecting each casting to a unique set of external physical pressures, resulting in individual unique- state figures, each bearing its own idiosyncratic imprint of the mould’s seams which appeared as ruptures suggesting a glitch, or accident, in the process of faithful reproduction. Evocative of geological strata and fault lines these ruptures impart each figure with a sense of disruptive violence and uncertainty, raising issues relating to the flexibilities and residual imperfections inherent in mass reproduction techniques, as well as handmade efforts.  Hazewinkel’s fixed and fractured field of versions was a meditation on the complex notions of authority often associated with conventional conceptions of the original.
