A suite of 13 photographs created as part of the artist’s doctoral project titled Stone, Authority, Violence: Relating Bodies, Materials, Remembering. Although Hazewinkel had previously worked with archival documentation material of ancient figurative sculpture these images represent his first direct photographic engagement with museum collection items. The objects represented in these photographs are part of the Collections of the National Archaeological Museum Athens and the Acropolis Museum Athens.
Created with a documentary approach to photography, these photographs were originally presented alongside images created with less documentary approaches to photography and a series of photo- mediated sculptural objects aimed at exploring how the very materiality of things is caught up in the human act of remembering.
Access to the Collection items was generously granted by the museums with the support of the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens.
